Family Group Photos at an Indian Wedding: A Simple Plan for Indore Families

Family photographs are the ones that get framed and passed down. They are also the ones that go wrong most often at a wedding: people wander off, the mandap is crowded and the schedule is already late. Good family group photos at an Indian wedding need a short plan, a calm person in charge and about twenty minutes. Here is how we run them in Indore.

Make the list before the day

Ask each side of the family to give one person a list of the groups they want: parents with the couple, siblings, grandparents, cousins, close friends. Keep it to ten or twelve groups. A short list gets done. A list of thirty groups leaves everyone tired and half the photographs rushed.

Pick one time and one place

The best slot is right after the ceremony or just before the reception, when everyone is dressed and still fresh. Choose a spot with even light, away from the crowd. We then call groups one by one, with the larger groups first and the smaller ones after.

Name one family helper

A cousin or an uncle who knows both families should bring people to the spot. This saves us from calling names into a crowded hall, and it keeps the elders comfortable.

Posing that stays natural

  • Seat grandparents and parents in front and stand the rest behind them.
  • Ask people to stand close, shoulder to shoulder, so no one is cut out.
  • Take one formal frame and one relaxed frame with a laugh. The second is often the favourite.

Do not skip the elders

Photograph grandparents on their own with the couple before they get tired. These frames are often the most treasured ones years later.
