You do not always need a palace, a lake or a rented set for photographs you will love. Some of the warmest couple frames we have shot were made a few steps from someone’s kitchen. A couple photoshoot at home works because home is where you are already relaxed, and relaxed couples photograph beautifully. Here is how to plan one in Indore, corner by corner.
Why home works better than you think
A shoot at home removes the two things that make couples stiff: an audience and a schedule. There are no strangers watching, no venue slot ticking down, and no travel between locations. You can pause for chai, change outfits without a trial room, and shoot again after a break. The photographs end up looking like your life, only better lit.
Chase the window light
Every home has one window that gets soft, directional light, usually in the morning or late afternoon. That window is your studio. Stand close to it, let the light fall on one side of your faces, and keep the background simple. Sheer curtains turn harsh sun into a gentle glow. The grid of a window or a balcony railing also adds quiet structure to the frame, the way old Indore homes with their jaali work and grilled verandas do naturally.
Use the balcony and the terrace
If your flat or house has a balcony or terrace, you have a second location built in. Early morning and the hour before sunset are the kindest times outdoors. On terraces, keep the horizon low and the sky generous; on balconies, shoot along the railing rather than straight out, so plants and grills give the frame some depth. Even a small sit-out with two chairs and a cup of chai photographs like a scene from your everyday life.
Everyday moments make the best candids
- Making chai or coffee together in the kitchen, actually talking, not posing.
- Reading or scrolling on the sofa, one of you leaning on the other.
- Watering plants or arranging flowers on the balcony.
- A slow dance in the living room to one song you both like.
- Laughing over something on your phone, shot from a little distance.
If you enjoy the unposed look, our take on candid vs traditional wedding photography explains why these frames age so well.
Style one or two corners, not the whole house
You do not need a Pinterest-perfect home. Pick one or two corners and tidy only those. A plain wall with a framed print, a bed with a neutral throw, a shelf with plants and books: any of these works. Fairy lights in a glass jar or along a curtain add warmth for evening frames. Solid-coloured bedsheets make a surprisingly good clean backdrop when the light is right.
What to wear at home
Keep it simple and coordinated rather than matching. Soft solids, earthy tones and comfortable fabrics photograph better at home than heavy occasion wear. One of you in white or cream and the other in a muted shirt, like the couple in the photograph above, is a combination that almost never fails. Our guide on what to wear for wedding photographs goes deeper into colours and fabrics.
A few things that make the session easier
- Shoot in the morning or the golden hour before sunset; harsh noon light is unkind indoors and out.
- Declutter only what the camera will see. Nobody inspects the rest.
- Keep the session short. An hour to ninety minutes is usually plenty at home, much like we suggest for pre-wedding shoots.
- Turn off tube lights and shoot with natural light alone; mixed lighting gives skin a dull cast.
- If you have a pet, include them. They steal every frame they enter.
Who is a home shoot right for?
Home sessions suit couples who feel awkward in public, families who want grandparents or pets in a few frames, and anyone planning an anniversary or post-wedding shoot without the logistics of a venue. They also pair well with a bigger outdoor session: many couples do a cosy home set one day and a location shoot on another, and we plan intimate weddings the same way.
Planning your own home session
If you want professional frames without leaving your living room, we are happy to bring the studio to you. We plan the corners, the light and the pacing with you in advance, so the shoot feels like a slow morning rather than a production. Call or WhatsApp us on 9877777695 to fix a date.
