Couple in traditional outfits under fairy lights at a sangeet night wedding in Indore by The Wedding Panchnama

Sangeet Night Photography: Lighting, Stage and Candid Tips for Indore Weddings

A sangeet is the one night of the wedding where everyone performs. Cousins who have rehearsed for three weeks, parents who surprise everybody, and a couple who finally gets to dance without a pandit counting the minutes. It is also the hardest event to photograph well. The hall is dark, the stage lights keep changing and people move fast. Here is what we have learned about sangeet night photography after many evenings at Indore banquets and farmhouses.

Talk to the DJ and the decorator first

Lighting decides the pictures. Before the event, ask the decorator or DJ about stage lights: are they warm or coloured, is there a spotlight, do the lights strobe or flash? Strobes and heavy red or blue washes can ruin skin tones. A simple request such as keeping one warm white light on the performers goes a long way. A short word with your photographer and the lighting team a day earlier is worth more than any editing later.

Plan the performance order

Share the running order of performances with your photographer, with the names of who is dancing. It helps us to be at the right side of the stage for each act, and to know which performance is the one the family will want a proper album spread of. If a surprise act is planned, tell us as well. The surprise is for the audience, not for the person holding the camera.

Make space around the stage

Guests love crowding the stage with phones. That is fine, but leave a clear path on one side for the photographer and videographer. A cleared corner of the floor and a guest manager who gently moves people back makes a visible difference to the pictures. Please avoid placing large flower stands or tall speakers in front of the dance floor.

Dress for the night

Choose outfits that move and look good under stage lights. Rich jewel colours and metallic tones photograph beautifully. Very glittery fabrics can create glare, and pure black on black can lose detail. If the couple is performing, practise in the actual outfit and shoes at least once so the twirl works.

Capture the audience as well

The best sangeet pictures are often not of the performers. They are of the groom’s mother clapping, the bride’s father wiping his eyes, the grandmother laughing at her grandson’s dance. A good team always covers the audience with a second photographer or a different angle. If you have only one photographer, say clearly which relatives you want to see.

Couple portraits before the guests arrive

The venue is at its best, the decor is fresh, and you are not yet tired. Spend ten to fifteen minutes before the guests arrive for a quiet set of couple pictures under the fairy lights or in front of the stage backdrop. For a longer, relaxed set of pictures together, a separate pre-wedding shoot in Indore is a good idea.

Keep your phones out of the first dance

This is a small request with a big result. When fifty phones are raised for the entry or the first dance, every professional picture has screens and flashes in it. Ask the anchor to announce a short phone-free moment for the couple entry. Everyone will get the photos and the video afterwards.

What to ask your photographer

  • How do you handle low light and coloured stage lights?
  • Will there be a second photographer for the audience and candid moments?
  • Can you shoot the performances and the couple portraits within the same evening?
  • How soon will I see the best sangeet frames?
